Is hypnosis safe?
Yes – it is a state of mind that naturally occurs in everyone and is no different from day dreaming. When in hypnosis contary to popular belief you will remain aware and in control at all times.
As a professional Hypnotherapist I only use hypnsosis for your therapeutic benefit, so it is perfectly safe.
Can you get stuck in hypnosis?
No – you always remain in control.
Normally you will be guided out of hypnosis but just as you can snap out of a day dream you would be able to snap out hypnosis if you felt the need. If left alone you may either drift into sleep (waking later feeling refreshed) or find yourself naturally returning to normal consciousness in your own time.
Is it like stage hypnosis?
No – I use hypnosis for therapy not for entertainment. You will remain aware and in control at all times.
It's a partnership between the therapist and the client, working together purely for your therapeutic benefit. I facilitate the session but I need your trust, willingness and cooperation to get the best outcome.
What is hypnosis like?
By its nature it’s rather subjective but it is best described as very similar to day dreaming when you let your mind roam free. It is a natural state of mind that you enter whenever you are absorbed in something like watching a good film.
Most clients find that it is very relaxing, their experience feeling especially real and vivid because they are in a more focused and receptive state of mind (but always remaining consciously aware).
Will I be aware of what is going on around me and will I remember what took place?
Yes to both. You may lose interest in your surroundings but you will always be aware of what is happening in the background and there will certainly be no memory loss.
Hypnosis is rather like watching a good film. As you become absorbed in your inner world you tend to lose track of time and lose interest in your surroundings. But if your hypnotherapist sneezed for example, although you would be conscious that it happened you would not be distracted by it (remaining focused on your own inner world). As for your memory of the session, again it would similiar to watching an interesting film. You may not always consciously remember every little detail but you will normally find that the most significant moments become etched on your memory and that you retain a good overall impression of what you experienced whilst in Hypnosis.
Will I lose control and do things against my will?
No – you always remain in control and your unconscious mind will always keep you within your own acceptable boundaries
As a professional hypnotherpist my objective is to help you meet your requirements, so I will be working to your agenda not mine.
Will I be able to be hypnotised?
Well the first thing to point out is that you don’t have to ‘try’ to be hypnotised and almost all of us have the skill or ability to go into hypnosis just the same as we are able to drift into a day dream.
It’s more a case of allowing yourself to go into hypnosis or giving yourself permission, just as when you find yourself day dreaming.
Essentially there are three skills involved, all of which improve with practice but are usually mastered in the first session:
1) The ability to relax: I have many proven relaxation techniques that will help you relax.
2) Becoming familiar with how you access and sense your own inner world: I will guide and assist you on your journey into your inner world.
3) The third skill is learning to accept what comes from your unconscious (or right brain) and refraining from using your critical faculty (or left brain) to analyse and question what’s going on: I will guide and help you to explore your own inner experiences and assist you in that process.
Whilst a one-to-one consultation will teach you these skills you may find it worth investing in a relaxation CD to help you get started in this process.
Do I have to be hypnotised?
Not necessarily. In the first session we spend some time seeing which ways of relaxing you like the most and then we build on those. It's more helpful to do what suits you because everybody is different.
We may not need to go through a formal hypnosis induction to gain results so the therapy will be taylored to your needs and requirements.
What state am I going to be in when I leave?
You'll be in a normal, everyday, alert state of mind.
I will be guiding you into and out of hypnosis and bringing you back to normal consciousness before you leave.
Who would you not recommend hypnosis?
I would not normally recommend it for those suffering from epilepsy, psychosis and those on medication for mental illness.
If the effects of these illnesses are only minimal then it may be possible to consider doing a session providing the right medical approval is given.
